What is dementia?

Dementia is not a disease, it is a more common expression of the condition in people that causes loss of memory and the inability to carry out everyday activities. In most cases, Alzheimer’s disease occurs, although there are still many forms of dementia, especially after stroke, problems with the thyroid gland, lack of vitamin and so on. It’s entirely wrong to identify dementia with senility and live in mischief that it is typical for aging to bring a certain level of memory loss and everyday functionality.

However, the symptoms may be different and are caused by many factors. Some recent experiments suggest that it is possible to locate potential dementia until the first symptoms appear. How is this possible? With the help of a very simple scanner of blood veins in the neck.

2002 Experiment

A team of experts from University College London (ULC) conducted a very comprehensive examination of more than 3000 samples or voluntary respondents. The assignment started in 2002 and included a precise number of 3191 people.  Scientists used an ultrasound scanner for the blood system in the neck area, and then the condition of the sample subjects was monitored for the next 15 years. It has been found that people with higher intensity of brain pulse have experienced a more substantial cognitive decline over the years.

A more intense pulse to the brain can lead to severe damage of the small veins in the brain, changes in the bloodstream as well as lighter bleeding known as a mini-stroke. The study has shown that people with the highest pulse intensity have the highest probability of a rapid cognitive decline in the next 15 years as observed by scientists.

Cognitive decline is often the first indication of dementia, but not the only one. When appears, it is too late. Dementia is actually a result of years of brain damage. However, such research can help to understand these conditions, their suppression and even treatment in the future. It is possible to imagine performing all day-to-day functions with adequate medical support and right therapy if the science approaches the problem on time and manages to register it at a very early stage.

What else can you do about dementia?

Keeping the cardiovascular system healthy is the primary thing. The brain feeds a perfect network of blood vessels. Any damage will lead to imbalance and serious risks, such as dementia among others. It is essential, as well as for absolutely every aspect of health, to live with as many healthier habits as possible. Move, work out and maintain regular body weight. A healthy diet will definitely help your brain stay young and functional while you are aging.

Dementia is not curable, but with the help of science, it can be predictable, and with the help of good habits also prevented.
