Bullies have been around forever, but now, technology gives them a whole new platform for their actions. Cyberbullying takes place over digital devices: cell phones, computers, tablets. This kind of bullying can occur through SMS text, or online in social media, forums, or gaming where people can view, participate in, or share to content. Cyberbullying includes also sending, posting, and sharing negative, harmful, or false content about someone. It includes, of course, sharing personal and private information about someone. Some cyberbullying crosses the line into unlawful or even criminal behavior.

Social Media

The most common places where cyberbullying can occurs are social media. Then we have text messages sent through devices. And, of course, emails. This problem is not something naive. It can be harmful, and it can cause long-lasting psychological damage, and also can drive people to suicidal thoughts or even actions.

Most targets of cyberbullying do not become suicidal, but they certainly have symptoms of depression. They feel sad, irritable, anxious and hopeless. They can even lose interest in activities they used to enjoy, and start to sleep more or less. Some researchers suggest that the psychological distress can lead to physical symptoms, such as stomach pain and headaches.

How to help as a community

It is crucial that people who are dealing with cyberbullying do not isolate and to seek support and help instead. It can also be helpful to keep in mind that cyberbullying is related to low self-esteem, suicidal ideation, anger, frustration, and a variety of other emotional and psychological problems.

And keep in mind that you should be positive, as much as you can, because you can learn to handle the stress in constructive ways, like eating healthy foods, working out, or trying yoga and meditation. Reducing stress can make it easier for you to see difficult situations clearly and make them easier to deal with.
