Your entire world will be turned upside-down, once you have a baby, but you are not all alone in that, your pet’s world will be turned upside-down too. Bringing a new member of a family home is an exciting time for both you and your pet, but it will take some time for your loving pet to adjust to the new little family member.
There are few steps you can follow to ease the transition by preparing your pet for this change, and in this article we are going to present you how to help your pet get used to your baby, starting before your baby is born.
Make a Pet Action Plan
The first thing you can do is to establish your family order.
Dogs and cats rely on the order of who is the most important to be able to know where they belong in the family and they care about who goes through the door first, who eats first, and who rests on the highest level.
These things are the most important for animals. So, establish your family order and be sensitive to your pet’s needs. You must identify problematic areas. Start to think about possible issues, such as sleeping positions, eating, furniture use, exercise times, touching by children, jumping up on people.
Train your pets
Start to train your dog to sit, stay, and come because these basic commands will learn the pet to listen to you and to understand that you are the one in control of the situation. Introduce your pets to people, especially with children.
Lots of people will come to visit you when your baby arrives, so get your loving pets used to it now. You can make a party, to invite people over, etc. Let the people you invite know that preparing the animals for the new company is the primary objective and make sure to supply the guests with treats for the pets upon arrival.
Introducing baby with your pet
Before you bring your baby home for the first time, introduce her scent to your pet.
You can send home a blanket or clothing so the pet can smell it and investigate it.
And when you come home with your baby, you could let your pet to approach the baby. Your attitude is fundamental during this transition period.
Supervise your pet and baby’s relationship
Animals are a little unpredictable, and babies can make some erratic movements, which can scare pets, and that is the reason why you should always be present when your baby and pet are in the same room, and to supervise them.
