Pomelo – Refreshing Citrus With Many Health Benefits

Pomelo is a citrus that can still be bought under the name pummelo. It belongs to the citrus family of Rutaceae. The fruits are quite large, and the outside is pale – yellow or green, while the inside is pink – white or even red. Pomelo has a taste similar to grapefruit and can be its sweetener alternative.

People often call it the Chinese Grape. Its origin from Southeast Asia, but since California is the largest producer of grapefruit, it can also be found in the U.S.A. Besides,  it is distributed to almost all parts of the world, like trendy health food.

What are the health benefits of pomelo?

Carbs in pomelo. It is a low-calorie food, although we can say that it contains more calories than many other fruits. They come from a large number of carbohydrates in fruit pomelos.

It contains two types of carbs. You will get 12.5 grams of sugar in the natural state if you bring one cup of pomelo. However, this will not reduce the nutritional value of the meal, since the sugar that is naturally in the fruit is less harmful than the one that I call ‘extra sugar.’ It comes along with fiber and vitamins that help you improve your health.

Other carbohydrates in pomelo are fibers. You will get just under two grams of fiber – or about eight percent of the recommended daily fiber intake in a single portion. The fibers enhance your health in many different ways. They also provide many other health benefits, including a reduced risk of some types of cancer, obesity, cardiovascular diseases, and diabetes.

GI or the exact glycemic index. It has not been recorded here, although high sugar and does not give much fiber, it is probably food with high glycemic. One research was examined the glycemic impact of a particular type of pomelo concludes that the GI is 72-78, and the glycemic load is about 4-5. A diet that has a GI of 55 or more is considered to be high glycemic food.

Fat in Pomelo. There almost no fats in this fruit.  One portion of pomelo provides just over one-tenth of a gram.

Protein and Pomelo. These fruits also contain a small amount of protein. One portion gives only 1.4 grams.

Micronutrients in Pomel. The fruit is an abundant source of vitamin C, providing twice as much of the recommended daily needs in just one serving. You will also benefit from small amounts of thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, and vitamin B6 when you consume these citrus fruits.

Grapefruit minerals include potassium up to 12% of the recommended daily requirement of less phosphorus, copper, iron, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, manganese, and zinc.

Pomelo as a superfood

Like most citrus fruits, the health benefits of pomelo come primarily from vitamin C. This essential vitamin is needed in everyone’s diet because our bodies are not able to make it natural.

Vitamin C is necessary for the best structure of the bones, cartilage, muscles, and blood vessels. It helps in the absorption of iron, promotes wound healing, and can also help prevent disease. In fact, studies that investigate the role of citrus in the prevention of cancer show that these fruits can provide a positive benefit.

You will also get a little fiber support. Most of us do not get enough fiber in the diet. The fibers help to strengthen satiety, improve the health of the digestive system, and can help lower blood cholesterol. A suggestion is to consume 20 to 35 grams of fiber per day.

How do I choose the best pomelo?

The hardest part of buying this fruit can be found on your local market. Not all food stores supply with it. However, you can find it in almost all Asian markets. Note that they can be labeled as “pummelo” or “shaddock”, what is a traditional name for it.

Pomelo is very large, certainly larger than grapefruit. You may see a pear-shaped pear. They also have thicker skin than their cousins.

Remove the thick skin and the white membrane before consuming pomelo.

Allergies and interactions

Many people who take specific cholesterol-lowering drugs should avoid grapefruit as they impede the efficacy of the drug. Harvard study notes that there were only a few subjects on grapefruit interactions, but based on this limited data, it can be concluded that pomelo juice and grapefruit juice act the same. So, you should avoid this fruit if you are on any of these medicines.

Also, people with known citrus allergies should bypass their consumption.
